motors and pondering

During the RC plane career there are many occasions when you find out just how much harder props are versus human flesh and just how adept motors are at driving them for just such the occasion. With glow motors there's a whole lot more fuss around the motor to get it started and to tune it, so naturally there are more mishaps. When changing to electric I've kept the planes small and the power pretty light on... and as such I've been curious as to what size brushless motor is enough to get onto the chart of flesh maulers along with their glow brethren.

Today I found that you really need not look north of a 400 sized outrunner spinning a 7x5. It hurt, and the absence of a large chunk of thumbnail will at least remind me for the next few months. For details, I'm sure to vent in the next episode. Maybe we should do a safety focus episode...

Thanks for the great job you guys do, I know it must take up some time.I am very new to this rc plane stuff and dont know anybody that I can call on for help. The cats down at the local hobby shop act like your a pain in the ass if you start askin questions. I own a cigar shop and help necomers out everyday, so not sure whats up in the rc world. I was hoping you could shoot out a podcast that covers some basis on batteries and gas engines- pro vs cons. I want to upgrade to a motor that sounds like a chainsaw on steriods instead of the electric I have now and thats were the boys at the rc shop thought I was an idiot. Maybe poor chioce of words on my part but LOOSEN UP DUDES AND HELP OUT THE NEWBYS. Thanks Cory

Hey Cory, thanks for getting in touch and apologies for the people at your local hobby shop. It's a pity that not all people are open minded.

Anyways, I'll bring it up on the next show so Jeff and I can have some chat about it. In fact, there'll be some questions of electric Vs gasser (with respect to large scale aerobatics) put to our next interviewee, so look out for that too.

      Cheers,
      Arron.
